St Bartholomew's Church was established during the 12th
Century. The first rector of Corton was Philip le Clerk in the
reign of King Henry II. The tower of the church was built much
later than the rest of the church (probably about 1486) and was used as
a navigation aid for sailors (in the 17th century a lighthouse was built
nearby).
During the 17th century the church deteriorated quite badly, falling
almost into ruin and the parishioners decided to make the chancel into
their 'new' church. The work on restoring the church continued for many
years until the Reverend Frederick Cook Fowler took out the wall in the
chancel arch and added the last bay of the nave to the body of the
church. A new west wall was built and many other improvements
continued.
In 1972 Corton Parish joined with St Margaret's Hopton as a joint
benefice. |
